My fondest memories are in Guatemala: at the top of the Acatenango Volcano, with the view of rolling hills, the ocean and the ever expanding beauty. The cobblestone streets in Antigua that lead to hidden boutiques and the sweet potato flavored ice cream have been a part of my life since I can remember. The loving people, the food, the loud boisterous Spanish sounds, our guatemalan slang, the contrasting smells, the perfect year-round weather and the bright colors, accompany me wherever I go. I always knew I wanted to come to the United States to study, but that my heart would always lie in the beautiful country where I became who I am. As I decided to come to Duke, I promised myself to keep a strong connection with Guatemala.
Freshman year I met Dr. David Boyd because I was told he conducts his major research in Guatemala. He works in a number of places all over the world and travels to a different country every month, and yet, his heart also lies in Guatemala. Meeting someone who is also in love with my country and is passionate about doing something to help has significantly shaped my life at Duke. Over the summer before sophomore year I went to oversee the NGO Dr. Boyd works with, Maya Medical Aid, in Santa Cruz La Laguna in Lake Atitlan. Seeing the project and meeting with the people from the town made us both realize we could do something bigger. We both dreamed of sharing the alluring beauty of Guatemala to Duke students and inspiring more people to help these communities develop and thrive.
Once at Duke, I met Camila Vargas, a very enthusiastic and passionate Colombian, who made me realize that many of us, who are from a Latin America, love our countries and want to transmit our passion to other students. This is how Desarrolla was born: an organization full of passionate students who want to inspire others to help their countries. We are in love with Latin America and our dream is to transmit that to the Duke community. Although we know a lot of work needs to be done to help our countries thrive, and we want to contribute to this process, we also want to encourage people to experience the beauty of our continent.
